On August 8, 2000, Kevin Johnson officially retired from the Phoenix Suns and began a new phase of his career by joining NBC as an analyst for "NBA Showtime," beginning with the 2000-2001 basketball season. He is working towards a Master of Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School.

Johnson is currently concentrating on business opportunities and community involvement in Sacramento, California and Phoenix, Arizona. He manages Kynship Enterprises, Inc., a corporation he founded in 1989, which acquires and develops real estate, among other ventures. In addition to pursuing investment opportunities, Johnson has assisted the Arizona state government by supporting and promoting the Education 2000 initiative.

Kevin Johnson spent eleven years in the NBA. Most of that time was spent with the Phoenix Suns, spanning 729 regular season and 96 playoff games. During his career, Johnson was named to the All-Star Team three times, received a gold medal in the 1994 World Championship games with the "Dream Team II," and holds an NBA Finals single-game record for minutes played (62) when the Suns defeated the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan in triple overtime in Game 3 of the 1993 series. He was the Phoenix Suns' all-time leader in assists (6,494), free-throws made (3,844), and free-throws attempted (4,572). During the 1996-97 season, Johnson became only the sixth player in league history to amass 11,500 points, 6,000 assists, 2,000 rebounds, and 1,000 steals.
