John M. Steele is Senior
Vice President – Human
Resources at Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA, the nation’s leading
provider of healthcare services.
He is responsible for recruiting, benefits, compensation, employee
relations, labor relations, employee development and HR administration
for HCA. In addition, Steele has administration oversight for Corporate
Services, the HCA Foundation and Community Relations.
Steele joined HCA in 1995 as Assistant
Vice President, Recruitment. In that role he was responsible for
executive and corporate recruiting. In 1997 he was promoted to
Vice President, Recruitment and Compensation, and in 2000 added
responsibility for organizational effectiveness and executive development.
His team was responsible for a number of key human resources initiatives,
including several of HCA’s
efforts to improve diversity at all levels, development and training
programs, a redesign of corporate and executive compensation, and
the HCA Cares scholarship program. Steele was named to his current
position in November 2003.
Before joining HCA, Steele spent a year
with Alcon Laboratories and nine years with Electronic Data Systems.
At Alcon, he managed the U.S.-based recruitment effort and for
EDS, he held a variety of regional leadership positions in their
staffing organization. He
serves on the board of the Oasis Center as well as the Nashville
chapter of Make-A-Wish.
Steele is a 1977 graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s
degree in communication. He and son J.D. reside in Brentwood. Steele
was born on September 21, 1955.
